Plot Summary:

When he was born, he was sick and always crying.

When he was six, he had all sorts of sinus problems. So his dad, a radiologist, took tons of x-rays as therapy to help make him better.

When he was eleven, a growth appeared on his neck. Instead of taking him to surgery to have it removed, his dad bought his mom a new car and new furniture for the house.

When he was fourteen, he finally got the surgery he needed. And then had a second one the next day. And THEN he found out that he had cancer and that was why the doctor had been forced to remove glands and one of his two vocal chords.

So now he is mostly silent. Watching his extremely dysfunctional family fall apart before his eyes. And drawing it all.

It isn't until he is finally allowed to go to therapy that he finds out that life isn't supposed to be this hard. Then and only then can he draw his way past it to a better life.

Critical Evaluation:

Even without the illustrations, this story is heartbreaking. But the addition of the amazing images of the author and victim in this story create a connection that the reaader cannot deny. Small’s terror, his parents’ indifference and cruelty, the realization of what their neglect and lack of consideration has doomed Small to for the rest of his life, are all crystal clear and fill the reader with emotions of sympathy and hatred simultaneously.

Reader’s Annotation: What do you do when the person who is supposed to know best makes the worst decisions on your behalf?

Publisher: First Second

Copyright: 2010

Plot Summary:
Think you know all about Greek mythology? Think you've seen all there is to see?

Well you ain't seen nothin' yet!

In this graphic novel version of the story of Zeus, readers get a taste of the Greek origin myth all the way through until Zeus takes over the kingdom of the Gods and sets up on Mount Olympus.

Critical Evaluation:
Here, readers can actually see what Greeks may have imagined when they came up with the idea of the three Hekatonchieres, which have 50 heads and 100 hands. Words cannot adequately describe their appearance, but O'Connor makes them real.

The graphic novel is also accurate when describing the basics of the myths. There are a few quotes and additions, but it all adds to the story.

Like Greek mythology, but have problems with Bulfinch and Edith Hamilton? Like graphic novels, but want something a little more epic? This is the book for you.

Reader’s Annotation: Gorgeous art and amazing storytelling.

About the Author:

George O'Connor is the author of several picture books, including the New York Times bestseller Kapow!, Kersplash, and Sally and the Some-thing. JOURNEY INTO MOHAWK COUNTRY was his first graphic novel, a long-held dream that weaves together his passion for history and ongoing research into Native American life. He's also the author/illustrator of a new picture book, If I Had a Raptor.

Title: Infinity Gauntlet

Author: Jim Starlin, Ron Lim, George PĂ©rez

Format: Graphic Novel Collection

Subjects:
  • X-Men (Fictitious characters) -- Comic books, strips, etc.
  • New Warriors (Fictitious characters) -- Comic books, strips, etc.
  • Avengers (Fictitious characters) -- Comic books, strips, etc.
ISBN: 9780785156598

Edition: 3rd Edition

Publisher: Marvel Enterprises

Copyright: 2011

Plot Summary:
Thanos is set to destroy half of the universe in order to impress Death and become her consort.

Critical Evaluation:
Amazing artwork and storytelling come together to tell the epic tale of Thanos and his crush on Death. He’s willing to destroy half of the life in the universe to catch her attention.

Reader’s Annotation: How far would you go to impress the entity that you love.

About the Author:
James P. "Jim" Starlin is an American comic book writer and artist. With a career dating back to the early 1970s, he is best known for "cosmic" tales and space opera; for revamping the Marvel Comics characters Captain Marvel and Adam Warlock; and for creating or co-creating the Marvel characters Thanos and Shang-Chi, Master of Kung Fu. Death and suicide are recurring themes in Starlin's work: Personifications of Death appeared in his Captain Marvel series and in a fill-in story for Ghost Rider; Warlock commits suicide by killing his future self; and suicide is a theme in a story he plotted and drew for The Rampaging Hulk magazine.

In the mid-1970s, Starlin contributed a cache of stories to the independently published science-fiction anthology Star Reach. Here he developed his ideas of God, death, and infinity, free of the restrictions of mainstream comics publishers' self-censorship arm, the Comics Code Authority. Starlin also drew "The Secret of Skull River", inked by frequent collaborator Al Milgrom, for Savage Tales #5 (July 1974).

When Marvel Comics wished to use the name of Captain Marvel for a new, different character,[citation needed] Starlin was given the rare opportunity to produce a one-shot story in which to kill off a main character. The Death of Captain Marvel became the first graphic novel published by the company itself.

In the late 1980s, Starlin began working more for DC Comics, writing a number of Batman stories, including the four-issue miniseries Batman: The Cult (Aug.-Nov. 1988), and the storyline "Batman: A Death in the Family", in Batman #426-429 (Dec. 1988 – Jan. 1989), in which Jason Todd, the second of Batman's Robin sidekicks, was killed. The death was decided by fans, as DC Comics set up a hotline for readers to vote on as to whether or not Jason Todd should survive a potentially fatal situation. For DC he created Hardcore Station.
