Family Storytime
Family Storytime is designed for children and families of all ages (generally 0 to 9 years). These storytimes focus on larger themes and ideas that are more advanced, while connecting children to the world and cultures around them. By focusing on themes like self-esteem, multicultural celebrations, and more, we hope to make children more tolerant and accepting, while also showing them how much people are the same.

Theme: Be Yourself
Opening Song - "If You're Ready"
Welcome/Talking Point
- Hello and welcome. Thank you all for coming. Today we'll be talking about how important it is to be just who you are. It doesn't matter what you look like or how you act as long as you look like and act like yourself. What makes you different? (allow for responses and encourage the answers). That's wonderful! Let's read about others who feel different, ok? Let's begin!
Book - Giraffes Can't Dance by Giles Andreae
Song - "It's OK to be Different" by Prue Whoo
Book - I Like Myself by Karen Beaumont
Song -"No One is a Nobody" by Linda K. Williams
Talking Point
- Take a few minutes and think about your friends and family. What makes them different from the other people you know? What are your favorite things about them? Are those favorite things sometimes the same things that make them different? What do you think about what makes you different? How can you make those differences a positive part of your day?
- For parents, it is a great idea to link books that you read with your kids to their real life experiences. Even the zaniest book can have a message that your child can understand. Books that are about other cultures or races can still resonate with other children and should be encouraged to help bridge gaps in understanding. You may learn a few things, too.
Song - "We're All Different and We're the Same" by Jack Hartmann
Book - Hair Like Mine by LaTashia M. Perry
Song - "That's Just Exactly What I Like About Me" by Catherine Slonecki
Goodbye Song - "Tickle the Clouds"
NOTE: Copies of all songs will be provided to parents during storytime for use during the event and to take home for reference.
