Baby Lapsit Storytime
Baby Lapsit Storytime (newborn up to 18 months) is the time for parents to bond with their infants and make reading a positive time for children. We encourage all parents sit on the floor or in comfy chairs with their babies. Take this time to play with fingers and toes, speak in gentle/reassuring tones, and make eye-contact. These things will help develop connections in the brains of the children and help them associate reading with positive moments and joy.
Opening Song - "If You're Ready"
Welcome/Talking Point
- Hello and welcome. Thank you all for coming. For our newcomers, this time is designed to give you and your infant some bonding time together and to give you some tips and tricks to make reading at home both fun and educational for you and your child. If your baby is asleep, please leave him or her alone to sleep. If your child gets fussy, feel free to step away to take care of his or her needs. Whenever possible, having your child on your lap during storytime is the best way to engage him or her in the book and to build that bond between you so now would be a great time to put your baby in your lap. Let's begin!
Book - One Foot, Two Feet by Peter Maloney
Song - "Ten Little Monkeys"
Book - Ten Little Caterpillars by Bill Martin
Song - "Five Little Peas in a Pod"
Talking Point
- Repetition is key at these early stages of learning. Remember that your child is still learning basic words and ideas. Talk to your baby whenever you are with her. Tell her what you are doing as you are doing it so that she can link the words to the actions. When she gets older, she'll want to read books with plots and stories, but for now you can just focus on teaching the words and their meaning. That is why today's books and songs are all about counting. We want to repeat the words and numbers in different ways to help baby learn meaning.
Book - Ten Little Sleepyheads by Elizabeth Provost
Song - "Five Little Ducks"
Book - Ten Tiny Babies by Karen Katz
Song - "Five Little Speckled Frogs"
Goodbye Song - "Tickle the Clouds"
NOTE: Copies of all songs will be provided to parents during storytime for use during the event and to take home for reference.
